How to Get Your Roof Replaced by Insurance

If your roof has sustained damage due to a storm or other natural disaster, you may be wondering how to get it replaced by your insurance company. You should know it won’t be easy as insurance companies fight having to pay for a roof.  Here’s what you need to know about getting your roof replaced by insurance.

  1. Assess the Damage with help from a Roofer

The first step in getting your roof replaced by insurance is to assess the damage. You’ll want to take note of any leaks, missing shingles, or other signs of damage. If possible, take pictures of the damage to provide to your insurance company.   The best way to do this is to have your roofer document all the damages.

  1. Review Your Policy

Next, you’ll want to review your insurance policy to see what is covered. Most homeowners insurance policies cover damage from hail, wind, and other natural disasters. However, some policies may have exclusions or limitations on coverage, so it’s important to read your policy carefully.

NOTE:  RAIN IS NOT COVERED, IN ORDER FOR A ROOF TO BE REPLACED BY INSURANCE IT SHOULD BE COVERED BY WIND or HAIL.

  1. Contact Your Insurance Company

Once you have assessed the damage and reviewed your policy, you’ll want to contact your insurance company to file a claim. You can do this by phone or online. Be sure to provide as much information as possible about the damage and include any pictures you have taken.

  1. Schedule an Inspection

After you file a claim, your insurance company will schedule an inspection of your roof. They will send an adjuster to your home to assess the damage and determine the cost of repairs or replacement. Be sure to be present for the inspection so you can point out any specific areas of damage.  Even better if you can have your roofer present as well.

  1. Get an Estimate

Based on the inspection, the adjuster will provide you with an estimate for the cost of repairs or replacement. This estimate will be based on the type of damage and the cost of materials and labor.  DO NOT SEND THE ESTIMATE TO THE INSURANCE COMPANY UNTIL THEY SEND YOU THEIR ESTIMATE.

  1. Choose a Contractor  (see #5)

Once you have received an estimate from your insurance company, you can choose a contractor to do the repairs or replacement. Be sure to choose a reputable contractor who has experience working with insurance claims. Your insurance company may have a list of approved contractors you can choose from.

  1. Get the Work Done

Once you have chosen a contractor, they will begin the work of repairing or replacing your roof.  Once your insurance company has inspected the roof you are free to get the roof replaced if it’s an emergency situation because it’s in bad condition.  Otherwise, I would wait until the claim is settled.

In conclusion, getting your roof replaced by insurance can be a complex process, but it is possible. By assessing the damage, reviewing your policy, contacting your insurance company, scheduling an inspection, getting an estimate, choosing a contractor, and getting the work done, you can get your roof back in top condition without breaking the bank.
